Kamal Haasan's elder brother Karthik makes a cameo appearance in the film, though he does not share any scenes with Kamal Haasan. The film was conceived to be a family entertainer focusing on child psychology, but director K Balachander add heavy masala elements such as romance, action and comedy to the story to gain wide popularity. Kamal Haasan who was making his debut in Tamil films was impressed by Kamal's performance and later turned to be his brother in law by marrying Kamal's elder sister Muthu after divorcing Sujata Bhave. Sridevi who was considered as the dark horse of the film became one of the biggest stars in Tamil films after this film. The film was promoted under the title "Agnisakshi" because Balachander felt that "Agni" means fire and "Sakshi" means energy.
